The Biology of "No": Why Boundaries are a Medical Necessity in High-Stress Seasons

I used to be a professional "pivot pro."

For 20 years as a kindergarten ESL teacher, I was conditioned to be flexible, helpful, and above all, available. If a lesson plan failed, I adjusted. If a child had a meltdown, I accommodated. I was the ultimate emotional shock absorber, a "yes" person who kept the peace at all costs.

Then came the breast cancer diagnosis.

Suddenly, my nervous system felt like it was held together by scotch tape and prayer. My "thinking brain" was offline, and my body was in a constant state of high-alert. But life didn’t care that I was recovering. The world kept demanding. Some people, used to the "teacher, be-quiet-to-get-along version" of me, expected me to remain the same: the one who shows up to every event, the one who carries everyone else's bags, the one who says "yes" to keep everyone else comfortable.

But I realized something that changed my life, my compliance was killing me.

The Cortisol Cost of "Yes"

When you're in the middle of something incredibly challenging - whether it's a health crisis, a professional setback, or a family transition, your energy is your medicine.

Every time I said "yes" to an external demand that I didn’t have the capacity for, I felt a physical surge of cortisol. My hands would shake, my chest would tighten, and my brain fog would thicken. I wasn't just "tired"; I was stealing the very biological resources my body needed to heal.

If you're currently navigating a "fire," a boundary is a medical necessity.

The "Bottom-Up" Boundary: Using a Script

When your nervous system is depleted, you don't have the "brain bandwidth" for long explanations. This is why I teach my clients the "No JADE" Rule: Do not Justify, Argue, Defend, or Explain.

One Tuesday, when my white blood cell count was at an all-time low, a family member called to demand my help with something. Old Eva would have apologized and tried to squeeze it in. New Eva used Boundary Script #3:

"That doesn’t work for me."

When they pushed back and asked why, I stayed with the script: "The answer is still no. I’m not discussing this further."

For the first time in my life, I didn't spend the next three hours in a guilt-ridden spiral. I spent those hours resting. I had chosen my biology over their expectations.

Rebuilding Your Capacity

By protecting my schedule and my health, I didn't just survive treatment, I rebuilt a version of myself that is actually stronger than the one I lost. This is the heart of Nervous System Navigation.

If you're facing a demanding season and your hands shake at the thought of saying "no," your body's trying to tell you something. You don't need to "try harder," what you need is to recalibrate your biology.

Stop Holding Your Breath

You don't have to navigate this 'fire' alone. If you're ready to move from "survival mode" back to yourself, let’s do this together.
